The file names which is longer than classic DOS 8.3 format or contain unsupported under DOS characters is converted to 8.3 format by following algorithm:

1. All periods other than the one separating the filename from the extension are dropped – a.testing.file.bat turns into atestingfile.bat.
2. Certain special characters like ‘+’ are turned into underscores, and others are dropped. The file name is upper-cased. 1+2+3 Hello World.exe turns into 1_2_3HELLOWORLD.EXE.
3. The file extension is truncated to 3 characters, and (if longer than 8 characters) the file name is truncated to 6 characters followed by ~1. SomeStuff.aspx turns into SOMEST~1.ASP.
4. If these would cause a collision,2 is used instead, followed by 3 and ~4.
5. Instead of going to ~5, the file name is truncated down to 2 characters, with the replaced by a hexadecimal checksum of the long filename – SomeStuff.aspx turns into SOBC84~1.ASP, where BC84 is the result of the checksum function.

Additional for Unix/Linux family platforms:

Under Unix/Linux it is possible to have in same folder some identical 8.3 file names in different character cases, i.e AUTOEXEC.BAT, autoexec.bat, Autoexec.bat, etc…

By default if this situation occurred mkboot.com stop work with “Names conflict after case conversion of short name” error.

It is possible use “Allow rename duplicate files” option on mkboot.com page to resolve this situation. In this case duplicate names will be converted under rules 4 and 5 from chapter “All Platforms”.
